Purpose
Schaeffer’s stated goal in HSWTL is not to provide a comprehensive study of all of Western culture, but rather to look carefully at points where major cultural shifts seem to have occurred.
My goal is to show how some of these shifts were manifested in the visual arts and highlight some influences that affected visual art particularly.
Approach
1.  Pattern of Realism and Abstraction
2.  Technical innovations, new media
McLuhan, Understanding Media - “the medium is the message” - the most powerful influences of new media on culture transcend whatever content them may happen to convey; last 3 transitions can be illuminated in interesting ways by this concept.
